Aromatic herbs are a must have for any home kitchen. Without oregano, basil or thyme it’s impossible to think about preparing meat, pasta or soup dishes. We usually buy the dried herbs because we think they need to be planted, grown and we don’t have time for all of that. The good news is that many plants don’t need to be planted in soil, they survive with just water. Here, we show you which ones.

Rosemary

Rosemary gives a distinctive flavor to chicken soup. It’s a very strong plant which doesn’t die easily. We should cut off the stems and put them in water, although they will take a long time to take root.

Thyme

As well as having excellent medicinal properties, thyme is a fundamental ingredient in cooking. It’s used to flavor vegetables, meats and fish. For example, a nice dish of lentils with ribs needs some sprigs of thyme. We should put them in a bowl with water and cut the greenest stems, not those with a brown color.

Mint

Mint is also a plant used to prepare pesto sauces. Although my preferred mint recipe is slow-roasted tomatoes, I can’t deny that a pasta with mint sauce is delicious. It’s a very easy plant to grow, we just need to cover the roots with water.

Basil

Of course, without basil there could be no pesto sauce, which would be an affront to the long tradition of pasta. To keep it alive in the kitchen all we need to do is stop it from flowering, because after this stage the plant dies. To do that, simply cut off the flowering parts which grow.

Stevia

Known as the plant of diabetics, stevia is a natural sweetener which you can grow in your kitchen. Not only can we use it as an alternative to sugar, but also for infusions. Just keep it in a warm environment.

Verbena

Verbena is a magical plant which was used by the druids of Gaul. Known for its medicinal properties, it’s famous for being the plant which healed Jesus’ wounds, and that which is used to ward off vampires. The fact is it adds a special magic touch to our seasoning. Just cut off some stems and put them in water, it takes a few days to take root.

Oregano

Oregano is one of those must have plants in our kitchen, present in almost all dishes. Although it has a special aroma for seasoning, it’s also used in medicinal treatments. A delicious pizza with oregano, olive oil and cheese can be your snack for the day. Just cut the stems and leave them in water.
